As of 1 February 2026, Margriet Schavemaker will join EBTH, further strengthening the organisation. As Director General of Kunstmuseum Den Haag (which also includes Fotomuseum Den Haag and KM21) and Escher in Het Paleis, Margriet brings valuable cultural expertise to EBTH.
Background
Margriet Schavemaker was trained as an art historian and philosopher at the University of Amsterdam. She specialises in modern and contemporary (counter)culture, media and museums.
In addition to her role as Director General of Kunstmuseum Den Haag and Escher in Het Paleis, Margriet works one day a week as a special professor at the University of Amsterdam, holding the chair of Media and Art in Museum Practice. She is also one of the regular presenters of the AvroTros arts programme Nu te zien!.
Margriet Schavemaker: “My main focus will be on culture, education and the social domain.”
Where can The Hague continue to develop, and what will you focus on within the Board?
“The Hague is a city with an enormous diversity of residents. Since taking up my position at Kunstmuseum Den Haag, I have been committed to ensuring that culture — and Kunstmuseum Den Haag in particular — becomes a place where as many people as possible feel at home and find recognition.
Within EBTH, I will continue this mindset: how can public institutions create more space for more voices and perspectives, and promote greater equality.”
